Terrain Week!
This week’s exciting update is all about one of the most important considerations in wargaming, terrain. Included this week are thirteen different videos, spotlights and links for you to enjoy.

Battlefront TV
John-Paul takes a look at the six new Essentials and Fantasy Battlefield in a Box Terrain sets released over September, October and November.

Desert Hazards (BB125)
The desert is full of unseen hazards. The fighting men would often run into terrain that held hidden features, difficulties or advantages undetected when viewed from a distance.

Dust Clouds (BB122)
Where there is no other terrain, the desert is flat and hard. This makes for rapid, if somewhat dusty, movement. Because the desert is dry, wind swept and covered in dust, any rapid movement around the desert creates clouds of dust. These can be both concealing at close range, but also give away troop movements when viewed from a distance.

Gun Pits: Desert Sandbags (BB126)
Gun pits give your gun teams excellent cover from enemy fire, keeping them in action and supporting your troops.

Desert Sandbags Dug-in Markers (BB109)
These markers are ideal for showing which of your teams are dug-in. Also during assaults when your troops may leave their foxholes to finish off the enemy you can leave the markers in place for your troops to return to.

Desert Obstacles (BB127)
Anti-tank Obstacles are impassable to tanks, allowing a defender to block off an attack route. Meanwhile the Minefields are filled with anti-tank and anti-personnel mines which are perfect to stall an enemy attack in vulnerable positions while your anti-tank guns and machine-guns pick them apart.

Desert Trench Lines (BB128)
Careful use of trench lines across the front of a defending infantry force will allow your men to fire on the enemy while protected. Connect these lines with smaller communications trenches to allow your reserves to advance quickly and safely while under fire.

Battlefield in a Box:
Escarpments (BB536)
The Battlefield in a Box range of tabletop-ready scenery is a quick and easy way to create a wargaming table straight out of the box, suitable for any scale miniature troops to fight over.

Large Rocky Hill (BB502)
These hills can be used to represent the rocky outcrops found on the battlefields thoughtout the course of history. Often the hard rock will be exposed after the softer rocks and soil have been eroded away.

Extra Large Rocky Hill (BB533)
In Flames Of War these would be difficult or very difficult going depending on the rockiness. Some of the taller rock faces you may like to count as impassable.

The 10.5cm leFH18 howitzers of German artillery batteries can lay down a formidable amount of firepower; smashing defensive positions ahead of the infantry assault. Should the German lines be overrun, those artillery pieces fire over open sights as anti-tank guns. In this role they are capable of stopping even the heaviest enemy tanks.

The Dreaded 88!
This week’s exciting update includes eleven different event reports, spotlights, podcasts, articles and links for you to enjoy.

Total War:
Market Garden in the Garden City
I would like to start by saying many, many thanks for such a fun day and the success of our (Christchurch’s) first 18,000 point game! I'm especially grateful that the three main goals were achieved; A fun day of gaming, inter?player discussions (and bickering) plus getting some appreciation of the difficulties experienced during the actual operation during September 1944.
Market Garden in the Garden City
A Brief History of the “88”:
The Most Famous Gun of World War Two
During the latter days of 1941 as the German Reich was reaching its apex, it was believed the Wehrmacht had in its possession a secret weapon that was able to knock-out any Allied tank at ranges far beyond those which they could fight back. While that Allies were left scratching their heads on what was causing such chaos, the Germans knew the tormentor of the Allied armoured formations as the 8.8cm family of FlaK and Anti-tank guns.

Stutzpunkt '88' FlaK Nest (GBX53)
After the Germans had recaptured Halfaya Pass on 27 May 1941 following British Operation Brevity, they set about reorganising and constructing defensive positions. In the forefront of their minds was the concept of the Stutzpunkt or strongpoint. A Stutzpunkt defensive position is prepared for all-round defence intended to hold even if outflanked.

Valentine II (BR060)
The development of the Valentine tank came about due to the dissatisfaction in terms of performance of the Matilda I and unsuitability of the Matilda II for mass production. The Vickers-Armstrong company proposed a new tank design; one that was smaller and lighter than the Matilda I but offered the same level of armour protection.

Pioneer Platoon (Afrika) (GE747)
The pioneers of the Deutsche Afrikakorps are specialist assault engineers, who would prove particularly critical in the 1941 Tobruk battles. Here the Tommies were able to use minefields, miles of barbed wire and the fortifications previously built by the Italians to protect the vital port.

Destroyed Valentine (XX528)
Though skirmishes where enemies randomly encounter each other are common, most major battles are fought over specific objectives that are pivotal to the plans of both armies.

Burning Empires Design Notes
Burning Empires is a different sort of book than you might be expecting. Think of this book as ‘Part II’, or a compendium, to Hellfire and Back. It covers all of major forces that fought in the Mediterranean Theatre during 1940 and 1941 that are not covered in Hellfire and Back, such as the Fucilieri, Greeks, and French. With these two books you should be able to field all of the major forces in the region.

Tanksgiving 2011
During the month of November stores across North America are hosting Tanksgiving. The idea is to bring together a groups of Flames Of War players and participate in a multi-player game which focuses on tanks, tanks and more tanks!

Compagnie de Tirailleurs HQ (FR741)
Although fighting on opposite sides in the war, both the Vichy and Gaullist French forces in Syria still follow the normal French organisations for an infantry company. Each captain commands up to 200 men, whether they are locally raised troops, colonial troops from Africa, or Legionnaires.

Tirailleurs Platoon (FR742)
The state of the French troops in the Vichy Levant was not too dissimilar to mainland France. While the majority of troops were made up of locally raised Levantine conscripts, the Army of the Levant was stiffened with several well trained regiments of Moroccan, Senegalese, and Algerian troops.

Tirailleurs Machine-gun Platoon (FR744)
The Tirailleurs Machine-gun Platoon is armed with the ever sturdy and reliable 8mm Hotchkiss mle 1914, the standard heavy machine-gun of the French Army since World War One. Capabile of fire up to 500 rounds per minute, the weapon could be feed by either a 24 round strip or via a 250 round articulated metal belt.

Tirailleurs Mortar Platoon (FR745)
The 81mm mle 27/31 mortar is the basis of every 80-82mm mortar in use in every other army in World War II. These are especially useful in the mountainous regions of Lebanon and Syria where mobility is top priority.

25mm SA-34 Hotchkiss gun (FR501)
The 25mm anti-tank gun may not be modern enough to cope with the latest German Panzers, but for the Vichy forces in Syria, it is more than enough to cope with Allied light armoured vehicles.

Special Order Range Updated:
Early War Guns
We've updated the Special Order range to now include the French 25mm Hotchkiss SA-34 gun, 47mm SA-37 gun and the 75mm mle 1897 gun. Also included are the British OQF 18/25 pdr gun and the OQF 4.5" howitzer.
